I don't recommend to any new player to try to drive with manual gears. Yo have to learn how to brake, accelerate and maintain a decent racing line, and ultimately get rid of traction control and brake helps before get into manual gears. For me, it is the last step for a 100% immersion.

The real problem isn't the control of the car (it's normal to be more difficult in the wet, np), but the fact that the cyber-zombies are 1 second a lap faster. They're on rails, you're on ice. THAT is the problem. Otherwise, just keep practicing until you'll get a grip (pun intended) regarding how to handle the car in the rain.
